Prelude

It was just a normal day, like all the others. I woke up, brushed my teeth, got dressed, and made breakfast. Nothing out of the ordinary or unusual happened. There were no strange feelings or thoughts entering my mind. It was just another day.
The regular morning routine fell out of sync when I spilled coffee on my white shirt. I rushed to change while the internal clock in my mind sounded the alarm to hurry back upstairs or leave the phone.
Going upstairs was easy, other than catching my breath. With the keys still dangling in the lock, I searched without closing the door. It was on the arm of the couch, which was strange. Usually, I put the phone beside my keys on the kitchen counter.
The door closed harder than expected. Looking around, I checked to see if i'd disturbed anyone. That's when I noticed my next-door neighbor opening his door. Not wanting him to get in front of me, I quickly stepped back, twisting the knob, making sure it was locked. Rushing to be first, I barely said hello before beginning the 36 step decent.
The sound of my steps in fast repetition caused a strange echo in the stairwell. My neighbor called after me, asking why I was in such a big hurry.  For a moment, I thought about pretending not to hear him. Wasn't it obvious I didn't have time to talk? How many mornings had he seen me rushing to get to work?
With one glance at my phone to check the time, my eyes lost sight of the next step. The phone flew out of my hand and the sound of flesh and bones hitting metal steps filled the stairwell. Everything began to move in slow motion. My body was falling, but somehow, I felt separate from it. There was a part of me that knew what was happening and another part that felt like it wasn't happening to me. Then, without another thought, my world faded into darkness.
